At Penta-C Editing, tech editing isn’t just about getting the words and numbers right — it’s having a genuine interest in your success beyond the project.

With me, you get a team player who’s in your corner from start to finish.

I’m a TKGA-certified tech editor with sample- and test-knitting experience across garments, socks, shawls, and other accessories. A self-taught knitter, I completed Suzanne Bryan’s Knitting Boot Camp (Levels 1–3) and have had my sample knits featured in patterns and advertisements by well-known knitwear designers.I pair my craft knowledge with a science and writing background well-suited to both the numbers and narrative of knitting patterns. Before I specialized in tech editing, I spent nearly twenty years writing and editing technical manuals, accreditation reports, grants, and doctoral dissertations for nonprofit, healthcare, and higher-education clients.Most of my work is in the disability space, including Deafness, blindness, and neurodivergence. My combined life and work experience means I bring unique perspectives to my work, with a special focus on inclusion for all.

Basic tech editing — $30/hour with 1-hour minimum

I edit knitting patterns to ensure each instruction is clear and the numbers make sense. I also confirm that the pattern layout matches the designer’s style guide, that stitch and row/round counts align with schematic dimensions, and that charts match their written instructions and vice versa.Unfortunately, I do not offer crochet tech editing at this time.

Non-pattern editing — $30/hour

I’m still active in freelance writing and editing, specializing in annual reports, grant applications, and accreditation self-studies. I have two decades of experience in higher education and nonprofits.

Initial contact

Once you send me your draft, I’ll confirm receipt within 24 hours to provide an estimate, collect some info, and share my working terms. Once you agree, we’ll hammer out a timeline for your project.

How long will it take?

It depends on the finished object, the complexity of the information, and the length of the pattern. Rough guidelines:

Hats & scarves ~ 1–3 hrs
Socks & mitts ~ 2–4 hrs
Shawls & cowls ~ 3–5 hrs
Garments ~ 4+ hrs

I make at least two editorial passes—often more—before sending a pattern back for review.

Crossing the finish line

We can revise a pattern as many times as you need until you feel it’s ready. If you run a test knit and I’ve tech edited the pattern, I offer a complimentary 30-minute proofread after testing.

Credentials

I taught myself to knit in 2018 using Michelle Hunter’s Building Blocks. After discovering knitting, I quickly jumped into customizing garments to fit my measurements, mostly by reading Amy Herzog’s Ultimate Sweater Book and watching knitting videos on YouTube. These days, you can usually find me on Ravelry as cmyehknits.Beyond knitting, I’ve worked as a freelance writer and editor in the higher-education and nonprofit sectors. I spent 5 years as a writer/editor in the Office of the President at Gallaudet University, editing high-level reports and data tables integral to the university’s operations. In 2020, I became a volunteer grant writer for STEP VA, a nonprofit serving people with disabilities through performing and fine arts experiences paired with sensory regulation and therapy techniques. During my 5 years as lead grant writer, I helped to secure 15 of 21 grants, including multiple statewide awards.Most days, my motto is “If I sits, I knits.” When I’m not sitting & knitting, I co-direct the Fredericksburg region’s first and only All-Abilities Choir, which I co-founded in 2023. Most of our singers are youth and young adults with disabilities. I’m also a member of The Knitting Guild Association and the Fredericksburg Spinners and Weavers Guild.
Finally, I’m a homeschool mom. I proudly educated one kid through high school and into college, and the second will graduate high school in 2027.
